Summer sporting supporters and much more!

The summer so far has been a busy one at Sullivan’s Heroes, with adaptation projects in full flow over the drier months, together with fundraising from supporters through activities and donations.

We kick off this update with news of our latest completed project, for ‘Mylo's new downstairs bedroom’.

Mylo’s parents tell us:

“As Mylo is unable to walk, this was causing a lot of manual lifting to be done by myself and Mylo’s Father. This was proving to be a struggle as the day went on, lifting him up and downstairs.”

Before
After

This meant building an extension on the family home for a bedroom plus a wash/wet room facility for 5-year-old Mylo – at a cost of £36,000 above the council grant awarded towards the works.

As Mylo’s parents now advise:

Mylo now bum shuffles and has a new lease of independence and can now take himself to his room to play with toys and not wait on us to be able to move him to his room. Mylo is now fully able to make his own choices and pick where he wants to go and when he wants to do things, now that all he requires is on the ground floor.”

Other projects have been making speedy progress over the summer with ‘An accessible home for David’ and ‘Theo’s home adaptations’ both nearing completion point.

Myk’s accessible home project’ is drawing ever closer to completion too, along with ‘Filip’s journey to come back home’ – with new flooring laid and an upgraded boiler system installed, thanks to the generous support of both Independence at Home and Arco.

Works on creating ‘Henry’s Safe Space’ from the garage conversion at Henry’s home is now underway too – with an added boost to the fundraising recently received from Independence at Home, towards the doors being installed in the new area.

Whilst ‘Aurora's Big Build’ has benefitted from funding from Florence Nightingale Aid in Sickness Trust to meet the costs of blackout curtains to be installed in Aurora’s new bedroom, to address Aurora’s sleep requirements.

The project to enable ‘Independent life for Ben’ has also seen significant support in recent weeks with the aid of The Wetroom Store, the Retail Trust and Walls and Floors.

It’s not just the Olympians who have been busy sporting over the recent weeks! There are other heroes deserving medals in the form of Willingdon Golf Club Ladies team, who have been fundraising for Sullivan’s Heroes over their various recent golfing activities; plus the teams at Amber Living and Grumitt Wade Mason, who have successfully completed their ‘Cycle to the North Pole’ challenge in aid of the charity.

We sign off with the fantastic news that B&Q Foundation have awarded a generous grant of £10,000 to Sullivan’s Heroes, which will be instrumental in helping the children’s home disability adaptation projects being supported by the charity.

Please do get in touch if you have any fundraising events, activities and ideas you’d like to share with us; or if you would like to apply for a grant or to fundraise through Sullivan’s Heroes.

Thank you for your ongoing support, it is greatly appreciated.
