Alex’s fight for independence

Alexander
Bedfordshire
I am a single parent raising money to convert the (2017) family home to make it accessible for my 7 year old disabled son Alex who attends special school. To give him the opportunity for independent living with support as currently he is mostly within a safe bed, unless at parks or softplay, for his own safety. He keeps pulling electrical cables and banging on the radiators hot or cold (he managed to puncture one), he can get angry with me as does not understand they are not toys. He predominantly crawls but is learning to walk and can achieve 5-10 steps occasionally with splints but needs open/ level environment with support from an adult.

The current layout is unsuitable for his needs as spaces are not easily accessible, there are no ramps and narrow entrances make it extremely difficult to navigate around the house. Due to Alex's sensory processing needs, he gets easily overstimulated and will start stimming/ rocking or banging his head against hard surfaces/ radiators. The aim will be to create a low arousal environment and stimulate Alex so he can reach his full potential and gain some independence with support as he grows. The reconfigured layouts means Alex’s spaces will link together on the same level so wheelchair accessible with access outdoors ( one of Alex’s calming spaces – he loves touching/ pulling plants and grass). I would also like to add a sensory room.

It will provide a much needed ground floor bedroom and bathroom as currently I have to carry him upstairs. This is becoming increasingly more dangerous as he grows, it is also becoming more detrimental to my own health causing back issues. I have to carry Alex to his feeding chair and for nappy changes as the spaces are not linked and he cannot manage going past everyday items without getting disregulated. At the moment he has a fascination with bins/ ovens/ hoovers/ curtains/ blinds/ plates etc.

Heating system is going to be installed throughout underfloor and electric points capped/ hidden in his spaces. Walls are going to be built to building regs 150mm insulation around entire ground floor and suspended floor issues addressed – hopefully what was a very cold house in the winter months will now be toasty – beneficial for Alex’s health.

Provision of off road parking as currently this is being done on the road which can be difficult at times dependent upon traffic as Alex is getting heavier and I need more space to get him in/ out the car. As he rocks so much a WAV is not an option as would need a carer with him at all times due to the amount of rocking.

I have maintained the front living space so myself and Alex’s twin sister have a space that’s ours that we can use for respite – a typical lounge. This will also provide space for Alex’s twin sister who he regularly attacks when frustrated – I know deep down they have a strong bond but needs to be filtered at times.

The project is ready to go with building regs/ planning/ DFG all approved.

Many thanks for your support

Alex and his twin sister were born prematurely at 31 weeks of gestation (weighing 819g) due to concerns about Alex’s placenta only intermittently working. His twin sister thrived, but he required additional intervention by various medical professionals.

His reflux resulted in him being constantly sick, making him unable to gain weight. Until January 2020 (aged 18 months), Alex predominantly slept as he hardly moved unless encouraged through physio exercises. Going outside caused him much distress and often resulted in constant colds. He could sit with the support of a cushion. He attended ‘Star Group’ for one term and thrived, learning to transition between sitting and rolling, and positioning himself to crawl almost instantaneously. He also started to hold a bottle independently while lying and interacting with objects around him. He still needed numerous naps throughout the day and easily wore himself out.

In March 2020, he had to shield due to the pandemic and his groups were cancelled. By the end of lockdown in April 2021, he could travel greater distances without getting tired and increased his speed. He started to enjoy going out into the garden, and showed a preference for favourite toys, which often comprised of flashing lights and sound. He struggled to communicate his needs and often got frustrated.

Currently 2025, Alex really enjoys attending school and is much more content during term time. He can pull up to stand independently onto his feet using various objects for support, can ocassionally manage 5 - 10 steps with splints. His reflux has improved but can still leave deposits of sick around the house; at times he can still get very distressed and gets trapped wind on numerous occasions. He still struggles to use a cup but can manage a bottle independently. He shows emotion in his sounds such as excitement and frustration. Alex often does a lot of head banging and this causes some injuries. He often hits his head backwards if he is sitting on a highchair. He keeps on banging his head against hard surfaces quite regularly.

Intervention is needed from an adult to stop Alex from harming himself and to help him interact with toys/surrounding environment appropriately and safely.

His interests have developed into cause and effect toys for example ball in bucket or down a slide though he frequently seeks sensory items for regulation.

He is still monitored and under the care of many specialists, non verbal with mental age between 9 - 18 month baby.

Alex’s diagnosis:
● Chronic lung disease of prematurity – no longer on oxygen
● Severe gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
● CGH Array showing chromosome 16p 13.3 micro deletion
● global developmental delay – non verbal/ incontinent
● hypoplasia of corpus callsum
● Autism spectrum disorder(ASD)
● Epilepsy
● Tracheobronchomalacia
● Subglottic stenosis – Grade 1
● Under active thyroid – medication

My hope is Alex will grow up to be an independent/ confident person and that his additional needs will not prevent him from achieving any aspirations/ interests he may have.
