Funding Abdul's Bedroom and washroom

Abdul Samad Ashraf
Coventry
We are seeking financial support for our child, Abdul Samad Ashraf, a 7-year-old who is non-verbal and diagnosed with autism. Abdul experiences significant delays in cognition and learning. He is generally pleasant, but due to challenges in communicating his needs, he will sometimes engage in self-injurious behaviour or may unintentionally harm those around him, such as head banging or physical aggression. Abdul remains in nappies and at times exhibits behaviours including stool smearing. Due to these needs, Abdul requires constant care and supervision. During the night, he often becomes hyperactive, engaging in jumping and vocal stimming, which disrupts the rest of his siblings and affects their performance at school.

Abdul has been awarded a Disability Facilities Grant to support essential home adaptations. However, there remains a funding shortfall of £3,500 for which we are seeking additional assistance. The planned adaptations include constructing a bedroom and an ensuite level-access wet room for Abdul. These improvements will provide Abdul with his own private space, separate from his siblings, and allow us to attend to his needs during the night without causing disruption to the rest of the family.

Due to the current cost of living crisis in the UK and the fact only one of can work due to the care needed for Abdul we could not find the funds anywhere else.

This would be a dream come true not only for us but Abdul often will not tolerate anyone around his space. Hence having his own room would help us regulate his sensory needs.

My child, Abdul Samad Ashraf, is a 7-year-old with significant care and safety requirements.

Abdul has been diagnosed with autism and learning disabilities. He is nonverbal and experiences considerable delays in comprehension and awareness.

While Abdul is generally pleasant, his limited communication skills can lead to frustration and overwhelm when he is unable to express his needs, which sometimes results in meltdowns involving self-harming behaviours such as headbanging or lashing out at those nearby. He currently is still in nappies and requires washing throughout the day and night due to him not understanding basic hygiene. At night he becomes particular disruptive due to his hyperactivity.

Due to these substantial needs, Abdul currently shares a bedroom with four siblings. This arrangement has had a detrimental effect on his siblings.

The proposed home adaptations will provide Abdul with a separate bedroom and wash facilities. These changes are expected to significantly alleviate stress and improve the well-being of the entire family.
How much do you need to raise?

We need £3,500.00.

How much is the total cost of the project? And how much was the DFG awarded?

The total cost of the build is £45,450.00. The total DFG grant awarded by the local council is £41,012.00. Which leaves a shortfall of £4,438.00 of which we're asking for help to cover £3,500.00.

When are you starting the build and how long do you think it will take?

We are hoping to start the build late March or mid April and the duration will be approximately 7 weeks.

How will this change your lives?

This would be a dream come true, we are a family of seven; 5 kids and two adults squashed into three bedrooms with the third bedroom being a small box room. To have an extra bedroom and wash facilities for Abdul so that the other siblings can have their disruption free sleep would be a life changing situation for us. Especially as the other children are still young. Abdul's siblings are from 2 years old to 14.
