There’s been a wealth of gratefully received support for Sullivan’s Heroes and the adaptation projects underway, as we move into the autumn months.
Organisations both locally and further afield have generously donated funds, such as Turners Hill Twinning Association and Milton Pools Fishery.
Individual projects have also seen funds boost the targets required to meet their works – with ‘Aurora's Big Build’ receiving help towards level access doors being installed in the new spaces created, courtesy of Hospital Saturday Fund.
An ‘Independent life for Ben’ draws ever nearer with assistance from both National Benevolent Charity and Florence Nightingale Aid in Sickness Trust towards non-slip flooring and a changing table in Ben’s new wetroom.
Whilst ‘An accessible home for David’ is almost at completion point with some final monies kindly raised by Hamilton Operatic and Dramatic Club, as David’s parents tell us:
“Our dream has become reality. There's still a little decorating to do, but it’s safe to say that our house has been transformed into an accessible, inclusive family home for David. We will forever be grateful and indebted to everyone that played a part on this journey.”
Meanwhile, wet room creations are progressing in leaps and bounds with ‘Myk’s accessible home project’ seeing the installation of flooring and tiling in the new extension to house his bathroom space; together with ‘Ahmed’s Big Build’ having the finishing touches made to his new level access wetroom to meet his mobility needs.
With 175 children now helped to date through Sullivan’s Heroes, the latest of these to join the list is 7-year-old Amara – who’s project for ‘Amara’s forever home’ will create a downstairs bedroom and wetroom, together with access to the property via an external wheelchair platform lift.
As Amara’s mum advises:
“The situation at present is that Amara, with her hospital style adult cot, two ventilators, suction machine for her lungs, heart and oxygen monitoring equipment, auxiliary equipment as well as her clothes and toys are squashed into a small room which does not allow for easy hoisting of her into a specialist chair. At home she cannot access the bathroom which is upstairs.”
“Amara is the most amazing child who has conquered many battles and deserves to live a life that most take for granted!! This involves having access to showers when dirty, being able to go in and out of her home, have fun in the garden and having the space to join her family in the lounge to enjoy arts and crafts which she loves doing, rather than being confined to her bed. I want the opportunity for Amara to live as full and normal life as possible.”
We round off this update by unveiling the latest completed adaptations project from Sullivan’s Heroes – as the ‘Last Blast For Sebby’s Space’ reaches its destination point.
Sebby’s mum tells us of the home extension works required for the soon to be 11-year-old:
“Before ‘Sebby's Space’ build, I was having to carry Sebby up and down stairs for all his toileting needs. He had a small potty on the floor. I was struggling to shower Sebby and this would mean that I would do a strip wash on the floor. I couldn't have a carer in, as it was not safe for them to be carrying Sebby up and down stairs etc.”
“The new ‘Sebby's Space’ has provided Sebby with downstairs facilities. It has allowed Sebby to be more independent within the home environment and Sebby delights in his daily shower (it's one of the highlights of his day!!). We have a regular carer now as it's all set up with safety in mind – so with this extra help I am a little freer to get more done and be a better mummy for Sebby.”
